2013 The start of the redevelopment of Abbey Bridge and Viaduct in Evesham by
“Hochtief (UK) Construction” a German Company
project.
This is the plaque which was on the old bridge when it was opened in 1928. Today the pillars holding up the viaduct are in disrepair, and the whole bridge needs to be replaced.
It has been most interesting watching the development, and taking photos daily. In the early days, I didn’t take my camera with me, but after two episodes that I missed I began to take it with me on a daily basis.
The first episode was when a man with a measuring stick entered the water and walked from one of the posts to the other. As he walked under the bridge the water was up to his neck! The water must have been freezing – it was certainly freezing out of it! He was very well clad and came out of the water in one piece!
The other time was when two huge trees were felled. The tree surgeons were leaping about the trees like monkeys taking out the large upper branches first.
Ainlee, a gentleman who attends our Church was delighted to get a job on the site. He had to pass a test and go through training before he could work on the site. He often gives me a guided tour of the advancement of the project.
